Salmon Run
In late summer the river begins to churn with
salmon. Both male and female die within two
weeks after spawning. When the eggs hatch
from ____ (____) in the stream gravel, the
two-year lifespan starts again and in spring
the young drift down to the sea.
With spears, ____ and clubs the Tlingits caught
and dried just enough salmon to last the winter.
Indian River is now closed to fishing to protect
the salmon, whose life-cycle is a link to Sitka's
traditional past.
Pink salmon, locally called "humpback," is
the smallest Pacific salmon. Mature pink
weigh on average of 4 1/2 lbs (2 Kg).
