Salmon Run

In late summer the river begins to churn with salmon. Both male and female die within two weeks after spawning. When the eggs hatch from ____ (____) in the stream gravel, the two-year lifespan starts again and in spring the young drift down to the sea.

With spears, ____ and clubs the Tlingits caught and dried just enough salmon to last the winter. Indian River is now closed to fishing to protect the salmon, whose life-cycle is a link to Sitka's traditional past.

Pink salmon, locally called "humpback," is the smallest Pacific salmon. Mature pink weigh on average of 4 1/2 lbs (2 Kg).
