Park County's name is derived from the fact that a large portion of Yellowstone National Park lies within the county. High, rugged mountains cover much of the county, and the continental divide forms part of its southern boundary. Numerous mountains throughout the county reach above 10,000 feet in elevation. It is an area rich in recreational resources with some of America's most beautiful scenery.

The populated areas of the county are in the northeast which includes part of the Bighorn Basin. In addition to ranching, numerous oil fields provide for industry in this area.

Park County was organized in 1909 with the county seat at Cody. It covers 6,969 square miles
