Box Canyon has been carved by the Cowlitz River, flowing out of the Cowlitz Glacier. With a depth more than 100 feet in places, it is only some ten or twenty feet across. Stevens Canyon Road crosses it at its deepest point. A footpath loops a short distance to the north, crosses on a footbridge, and comes back to the road.
The evidence of glaciers extending to this point in the canyon can be seen along the path and at a wayside stop on the road. Scratches in the bedrock show where boulders once scoured the surface.
