Fruita Schoolhouse
Mormon settlers of Fruita built the school in 1896.
Later alterations and repairs have changed it very little. Eight grades were taught in one room - as many as 26
pupils, and as few as 8. In the early years school was
open only during winter months. The rest of the time
children helped with the farming and homesteading.
More than a classroom, the building was a meetinghouse
and Sunday school, and a Saturday night social center. The last class was held in 1941.
