The town of Virgin lies on the north bank of the Virgin River, in a narrow valley cut by the river through the red rocks of southern Utah. Irrigation water from the river feeds an abundance of cottonwood and willow trees and also supplies irrigation for green fields along the river bottoms. Above the town on both sides of the river, the angular shapes of red-rock mesas rise against the sky, topped by occasional pinnacles of rock.

A tremendous influx of population into the Washington County area has also affected this small town, which traditionally has been a farming community. It was settled by Mormon Pioneers. The proximity of Zion National Park helps to fuel some of the town's grown.

Utah Highway 9 passes east-west through the town. La Verkin and St. George lie to the west, and Zion to the east. Kolob Road and Mesa Road provide access to the mountains on the north, including portions of the national park. Virgin's population was 394, as of 2000.
