Richfield sits on the western edge of the Sevier River Vally at the feet of the Pahvant Mountains. Behind the city the mountains rise in red- and yellow-colored cliffs and pinnacles, studded with the dark green of juniper trees. Trees growing in the city make it stand out from the patchwork of farms around it.

Like most Utah towns, Richfield was settled by Mormon pioneers. Coming from Sanpete County, they arrived at what was called Big Spring on January 6, 1864. Today the population is 6,847 (as of 2000) and Richfield is the county seat of Sevier County.

Interstate 70 passes between Richfield and the mountains, heading west toward Interstate 15 and east toward Green River.
