Mt. Carmel School/Church

The one-room front section of this building was constructed
c. 1890 as a school, replacing the original 1880 log school-
house. The rock for the building was hauled by team and
wagon from a hill about a mile south of town. Later, a lumber
wing was added making it a two-room school. The building
also served as a recreation hall, civic auditorium, and meeting
place for the Mt. Carmel Ward of the LDS church. After a fire
in 1919, the building was vacant until the church took it over
and remodeled it in 1923-24. The well-matched rear wing
added at that time housed a stage and two classrooms. The
building was used primarily as a chruch from 1924 to 1961,
when the Mt. Carmel Ward was incorporated into the Orderville
Ward.
