Native American rock art and early explorer records
indicate that bighorn sheep once were common in Utah.
Diseases carried by domestic sheep, overgrazing, and
hunting reduced bighorn populations. Eventually the
bighorn disappeared from Utah.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, in cooperation
with the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management,
reintroduced Rocky Mountain bighorn at
Flaming Gorge. The herd was split between the two
sides of the Green River Corridor. They have done well
in their historic habitat at Baretop Mountain and Sheep
Creek Canyon. Look for them across the canyon and
when you visit the Geologic Loop.
