Bighorn Need a Home

Created through Careful
Habitat Management

The rugged cliffs of the Green River Corridor provide a
protected environment for Rocky Mountain bighorn
sheep. Since they are sensitive to diseases and
parasites carried by domestic sheep, livestock
grazing has ceased in the area. Careful management turns
marginals areas into good habitat.

An open view to spot predators is essential to the
bighorn. Prescribed burns and chaining create open
forage, as well as travel corridors through dense pinyon-
juniper forest. Reseeding projects create forage; water
projects increase drinking water. Managing wildlife
habitat for the bighorn benefits other species as well.
On Baretop Mountain bighorn share their managed
habitat with elk, pronghorn, and mule deer.
