1923 - Colossal sculpture in the Black Hills first
suggested by Doane Robinson
1924 - Gutzon Borglum's first visit to the Black Hills.
1927 - Address by President Calvin Coolidge at
Mount Rushmore and first actual drilling.
1929 - Senator Norbeck sponsors legislation for
first Federal funds and creation of Mount
Rushmore National Memorial commission.
1933 - National Park Service first given jurisdiction
of the project.
1940 - Final appropriation by Congress for completion
of Mount Rushmore Sculpture project.
1941 - Death of Gutzon Borglum in Chicago.
