The Green River, passing by the Uinta Mountain Range, cuts a deep gorge along the base of the mountain named Red Canyon. In 1958 construction on the Flaming Gorge Dam began, forming the reservoir deep in the gorge and extending into the desert country to the north. With forested mountain slopes at one end, barren and colorful rocky mountains at the other end, and the cliff-lined gorge, Flaming Gorge sits amidst a variety of intriguing and beautiful terrain.

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area was established on October 1, 1968 with 207,363 acres including the reservoir and surrounding land. It lies half in Wyoming and half in Utah.
