Rock Cribs

What are they?

Those strange, wire-wrapped piles of rocks that
you see adorning the surrounding landscape are
more than monument to some rancher's ability to
stack cobbles! In a region where wood for fence
posts is scarce and expensive, they provide stable
anchors along fence lines so that wire may be
tensioned appropriately.

Fences allow ranchers and land management agencies to regulate
grazing and optimize the rangeland's productivity. Remember to
always leave gates exactly as you find them—if open, leave them
open; if close, close them!
