Paul sprang up in the early 1900s at a stop on the railroad in the middle of the newly irrigated Magic Valley region of Idaho. The plains of the Snake River Basin stretch for many miles in all directions, with a few hills and mountains visible in the distance. A rich farmland surrounds the city and agriculture dominates its way of life.
The population of Paul is 998, as of the 2000 census. It lies at the intersection of State Highways 25 and 27, and a short distance north of Interstate 84. The Snake River also passes a few miles to the south.
