Ashton is named after Bill Ashton, an engineer for the Oregon Short Line railroad, who homesteaded here. The town was settled when the railroad was built here and was incorporated in 1906.
It is located in the plains at the eastern end of the Snake River Basin and west of the Teton Mountains. Two rivers pass close to Ashton, Henrys Fork on the north, and the Falls River to the south.
