About Ashton

Ashton is named after Bill Ashton, an engineer for the Oregon Short Line railroad, who homesteaded here. The town was settled when the railroad was built here and was incorporated in 1906. It is an agricultural area, with farmland stretching for miles in every direction.

It is located in the plains at the eastern end of the Snake River Basin and west of the Teton Mountains. Two rivers pass close to Ashton, Henrys Fork on the north, and the Falls River to the south.

Ashton's population was 1,129 as of the 2000 census. The elevation is 5,259 feet. U.S. Highway 20 passes through Ashton, heading north and southwest. State Highway 47 begins at Ashton and heads westward and State Highway begins here and heads south.
