Mormon pioneers arrived and founded Paris on September 26, 1863, making it the oldest town in Bear Lake County. It is also the county seat. 30 families formed the first settlement and enjoyed a mild winter. The next spring 700 more people arrived and the town's population has not changed much since.

Paris sports a remarkable landmark for its size. Known as the Paris Tabernacle, the large sandstone church seats three times the population of the town, over 2000 people, and has a steeple 110 feet tall.

Paris is situated at the mouth of Paris Canyon, a long, gentle-sloping canyon leading into the mountains to the west. Paris Creek originates at Paris Spring and flows past the south of Paris.

The streets of Paris are laid out on a grid with 5 streets running east-west and 6 running north-south.
