Miranda Campbell and his family were the first settlers of Bloomington, arriving in the spring of 1864. By fall the townsite had been surveyed and 40 one-room log homes had been built. The population as of 2000 is 251, and the town remains a rustic ranching community. The original settlers were Mormon pioneers and the town is still predominantly of the LDS faith.

Bloomington lies on the west side of Bear Lake Valley, at the mouth of Bloomington Canyon at an elevation of 5,970 feet. Bloomington Creek flows out of the hills east of the town, supplying irrigation water for ranching. A pleasant drive up the canyon brings you to Bloomington Lakes, a popular summertime getaway, tucked in right at the base of the stone peaks of the Wasatch Mountains.

U.S. Highway 89 passes through Bloomington heading northward toward Paris and southward to St. Charles. Bear Lake lies several miles to the southeast and is a major tourism draw for the area.
