About Lava Hot Springs

Lava Hot Springs was a winter camp for Indians long before white men discovered it in 1812. It was part of the original Fort Hall Indian Reservation, but was later purchased by the federal government and the Idaho Dept. of Parks and Recreation now operates the springs. For a while, the Oregon Trail passed by Lava Hot Springs.

The Portneuf River passes close to the springs which are located near a gap in the hills on the east side of a narrow, hilly valley. The town was established against the hills south of the river and U.S. Highway 30 passes by on the north side. As of 2000 the population is 521. The elevation is 5,000 feet.
