Dinosaur is named for Dinosaur National Monument, a famous preserve of dinosaur and other ancient fossils, which lies to the north. The town features streets named after dinosaurs and a model dinosaur at the main intersection. The population as of 2000 is 319.
It lies in northwestern Colorado, a short distance from the Utah border. To the north, where the monument is, the terrain is rugged and mountainous, with gorges carved by the Green River. Southward lies a large desert valley.
