Succession
Few plant species are able to grow in porous
volcanic soil. First stage succession plants need to
sink their roots deep into the soil to reach water. An
accumulating plant litter will improve the quality of
the soil and allow for greater plant variety. Jeffrey
and lodgepole pines and red and white firs will
grow in recovering sites such as the Devastated
Area.
