Loomis Hot Rock

Benjamin Franklin Loomis, an amateur
photographer from Viola, photographed many of
Lassen Peak's eruptions from 1914 to 1921.

This black dacite boulder was transported here
during the May 19, 1915 eruption. It was still warm
when Loomis photographed it on May 22, 1915, so
he labeled the picture "hot rock."

By comparing the 1915 photograph with the present
scene, you can see how quickly trees start growing
again after a natural disaster.
