Viewed from Historic Route 66, the black volcanic cone of Amboy Crater rises from a dark lava field at the edge of Cadiz valley. It rises 250 feet high with a central crater 100 feet deep, (which breaches the rim on the west side). From the road it appears flat-topped with short, sloping sides.

It is a young volcano, considered by geologists to have erupted as recently as 500 years ago. Due to its young age and well-preserved condition, as well as it's prominence as a landmark, it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1975.

A mile-long trail traverses the lava field and climbs to the rim of the Amboy Crater, entering through the western breach in the rim. The trail begins at a parking area equipped with restrooms and picnic tables.
