Artists Palette
Various mineral pigments have colored these
volcanic deposits. Iron salts produce the reds,
pinks and yellows. Decomposing mica causes the
green. Manganese supplies the purple. Colors
on the 'palette' are reproduced in a larger
scale on the mountains around Death Valley.
