About Summit County

A few narrow valleys, high in the rugged Wasatch Mountains, are the nucleus of Summit County. Henefer Valley and Rhodes Valley lie on the Weber River and are home to the towns of Kamas, Coalville, Echo and other farming communities. Parley's Park occupies a spot between the Weber River and the peaks of the Wasatch Mountains. The upscale community of Park City, famous for its ski resorts, is nestled against the mountain peaks in Parley's Park. Beyond these inhabited areas, Summit County is a remote area of mountains and canyons. Utah's highest mountains, the Uinta Mountains, form part of its southern boundary, including King's Peak at 13,528 feet in elevation.

Weber county was organized in 1854, with its county seat at Coalville. It consists of 549 square miles. Its population as of 2000 is 29,736. Interstate 80 makes the climb up Parley's Canyon from Salt Lake City into Summit County, crosses over into Henefer Valley and then follows Echo Canyon into Wyoming. U.S. Highway 40 leaves Interstate 80 near Park City and heads south towards Heber. State Highway 150 leaves from Kamas, climbing into the high Uintas, where it turns northward into Wyoming.
