About Sacramento

Sacramento, the capital city of California, lies at the heart of California's Central Valley at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers. The elevation is near sea level and the ocean tides reach nearly to the city. Farmland, grasslands and swamps can be found surrounding the city. A extensive suburban area extends for many miles in some directions.

Sacramento was incorporated in 1850 and is one of the earliest settlements in California. The streets of the central part of the city are laid out in a grid which is aligned with the railroad, rather than north-south and east-west. The state capitol building is in the center of this area, surrounded by a park.
